What is hyperbaric oxygen therapy?
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a medical treatment in which you breathe near-100% oxygen inside a pressurised chamber, at a pressure higher than normal atmospheric levels (typically 1.5–3.0 ATA). At that pressure your blood carries far more dissolved oxygen than usual, so oxygen reaches tissues a normal breath cannot — which is why HBOT is used to speed healing, reduce inflammation and support recovery across a range of conditions.

The Science
How does HBOT work inside your body?
Normally almost all the oxygen you breathe is carried by haemoglobin in red blood cells, and that system is already close to full. HBOT changes the physics: raising the pressure forces extra oxygen to dissolve straight into the blood plasma and other body fluids, driving it deeper into tissue. This produces several documented effects:
- Oxygen reaches oxygen-starved tissue — plasma can carry oxygen into swollen, injured or poorly perfused areas that red cells struggle to reach.
- New blood-vessel growth (angiogenesis) — repeated sessions stimulate the body to build new capillaries, improving long-term blood supply to a wound or injury.
- Reduced swelling and inflammation — high tissue-oxygen levels help control excess inflammation and reduce swelling.
- Antimicrobial support — oxygen-rich tissue is hostile to certain bacteria and boosts white-cell killing power, part of why HBOT is used in specific serious infections.

Step by Step
What a hyperbaric oxygen therapy session is like
Initial Consultation
Before your first session, a member of our clinical team reviews your health history, current medications, and goals. This takes 15–20 minutes and ensures your programme is designed for you specifically — not a generic plan.
Preparing for the Session
You will be asked to wear comfortable, loose clothing — cotton is ideal. Avoid perfumes, oil-based products, and synthetic fabrics on session days. No special diet is required, though we recommend eating a light meal beforehand and staying hydrated.
Entering the Chamber
The chamber is clean, well-lit, and designed for comfort. Depending on the model at your centre, you may sit or recline. Many clients bring a book, listen to music, or use the session to simply rest. There is nothing to do except breathe normally.
Pressurisation
The session begins with a gentle pressurisation phase — typically 10 to 15 minutes. You may feel a slight pressure sensation in your ears, similar to what you experience in an aeroplane or when descending in a lift. Our team will show you a simple equalisation technique before your first session — most clients adapt quickly.
The Therapy Window
Once the target pressure is reached, your session is fully underway. This is where the therapeutic work happens. Duration varies by protocol — typically 60 to 90 minutes. Your chamber has a viewing window, and our team is always nearby.
Depressurisation
At the end of the session, pressure is gently reduced over 10 to 15 minutes. You simply continue resting. There is no abrupt change, no discomfort.
Post-Session
Most clients step out feeling refreshed, calm, and noticeably clearer. Some feel a gentle tiredness — this is normal and typically passes within an hour. You can drive, return to work, and continue normal activities immediately.

Safety
Is HBOT safe? Side effects and who should avoid it
Delivered in a properly certified chamber under trained supervision, HBOT has a strong safety record. Like any medical treatment it has side effects, and some people should not have it.
- Common, usually mild: ear or sinus pressure (the most frequent effect), temporary changes in vision, and tiredness after a session.
- Rare but serious: oxygen toxicity or lung/ear injury — which is exactly why pressure, duration and chamber standards matter.
- Extra care or avoid: people with certain untreated lung conditions, recent ear surgery, or specific other conditions — this must be assessed individually before treatment.

Chambers & Standards
Soft chamber vs hard chamber — and why standards matter
Not all “HBOT” is equal. Hard chambers certified as pressure vessels for human occupancy (PVHO / ASME PVHO-1) reach the higher pressures (around 2.0 ATA and above) at which most clinical effects are documented. Soft/mild chambers at ~1.3 ATA are a different, gentler category. Knowing the difference protects both your safety and your money.
